Sicily, Rum and Sugar Cane

Few people know that sugar cane, introduced to Sicily by the Arabs, was cultivated on the island many centuries before Columbus brought it to America. Sicilian sugar was famous and exported throughout Europe.

After the decline of the seventeenth century, it was the Pignatelli Aragona Cortes, Marquises of Avola, who preserved this tradition, starting the production of a fine rum, distilled in the city until the early twentieth century.

Today, we are the heirs of this history. Since 2017, we have brought back to Avola the cultivation of sugar cane and the production of agricultural rum, a living part of the Sicilian landscape and culture.
